Dear
all,
the
history of the different tables - as well as other methods of solving the
nautical triangle - is summed up in chapter XXI of the 1977 ( and some earlier)
edition of Bowditch. It was dropped from later editions,
alas.
More
on the development may be found in: Anderson, The Genesis of the E.A.N.T.s, in:
Journal of the Institute of Navigation, Vol. 6 (1953), 333 -
357.
Regards,
Wolfgang

I just checked my copy on HO-229 and vols. 5 and 6 are 1970 and the others are 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1980. Dutton, 1969 mentions HO-229. My HO-214 start in 1940. HO-214 is mentioned in the Bowditch, 1938 but not mentioned in Dutton, 1934.Weems, 1938 mentions HO-214 but does not discuss it because "it will likely be several years before it is available."
My real question, however, is why was the arangement of the tables turned on its side with pages indexed by LHA and not by LAT as in HO-214 and HO-249 which put all the information you needed for a round of sights together on several consecutive pages for your latitude.
With HO-229 you always have to chase around through the whole book because of its arangement by LHA.

When I studied Navigation in about 1967 (Navy ROTC), we were taught Pub 214. My oldest volume of Pub 229 is dated 1970. I did a search of abebooks.com and found 12 copies dated 1970, and zero copies with an earlier publication date. I vote for 1970 as the date of first publication for Pub 229.
