Steering by swell was one of the first lessons I was taught as a 18 year old cadet helmsman. The patient watch officer did well instructing us to keep the swell angle constant off the bow then covered the steering compass to test us.
The horrible feeling of being utterly lost and survivors guilt are perhaps off topic here but the pain of such experiences seems to permanently scar the mind so as to never be forgotten nor repeated.
