Frank, I don't think the shades can be polarised as there is no means of crossing them to reduce the light intensity, though they can be superimposed as normal; and Rommel, the rather uncommon C Plath Yachtsman sextant has only two index and one horizon shade. The Freiberger yacht sextant has two and two, like the clumsy Plath Navistar Professional sextant. The two index shades of the Plath Yachtsman are adequate for a bright summer sun in 34 degrees south though the single horizon shade means that index error cannot be checked using the sun. I suspect most people never do anyway.
