Here is author Jack London aboard his vessel, the "Snark", probably in 1908 shooting the Sun with his sextant. Can we estimate the altitude of the Sun from the photo?
I saw a copy of the second photo a few days ago in an exhibit of maritime photography at the little San Francisco Maritime Museum. It's a staged portrait showing Jack London and his wife Charmian studying a map of some sort, and obviously that's a sextant serving as a prop or a paperweight in front of them.
