Probably the best place to get good information is in a nineteenth-century navigation manual. Some time back Frank Reed pointed us to a website that has the 1828 Norie.
Like most of the old manuals, Norie gives the quadrant and sextant separate chapters. The chapter on the sextant is at:

    http://www.mysticseaport.org/library/initiative/ImPage.cfm?BibID=13617&ChapterId=28

It's about ten pages long. It will reward carefull study.
