    Richard,
Welcome to the NavList! You probably have a lot of experience to share.
In your circumnavigation, I suppose you did not use a chronometer, which is
much more expensive than a wristwatch with (or without) radio checks?

    Alex.

    Subject: [NavList] Introduction

Hello all - thought I'd post a short introductory msg as the newest member to
the group! My name is Rich. I'm an avid celestial navigator and, ta boot, a
celestial circumnavigator! Thirty years ago, as I resigned my commission
with the United States Navy (nuke subs) to start that 3 1/2 year journey, I
had a choice to make - spend $5,000 on that newfangled positioning technology
just entering the market (GPS) or spend $500 on a used Weems and Plath
sextant at the local second hand nautical store in San Diego. My finances
dictated the latter and I never looked back. Currently I'm refitting another
boat with my wife to cruise again (but no circumnavigation). The new VHF I
bought came equiped with GPS, but that's all the upgrading I'm doing. I just
love the practise, the science, and the art of celestial navigation and I'm
looking forward to plotting positions again! Thanks! Rich
