To make things more fun, I (ship's master) tend to decide when we cross the IDL based on the ship's schedule.  I try never to make it on a weekend or holiday to avoid the arguements about the pay, despite it being spelled out in the contract.  Like most zone description lines, it's as much a matter of convience as anything else.  I'd love to just keep UTC to make things simple, but every port seems to want to keep their time zone.
