Noonan used Pioneer octant serial number 12-36, the twelfth on manufactured in 1936.

At that point it was called a Mk 3. It was also called the A-5 at some point. The A-7 has an improvment over the A-5 in that it has a taller adjustment knob incorporating a white surface and a pencil marking lever which allows the determination of the median of a series of sights. It is also very convient to use because the eyepiece can be swiveled ninety  degrees right and left.
