    I was wondering  why you had said towards (-;

    I now get 19° 09' for Hc from  both 3270 and the cosine formula. 486 gives me 19° 08.7'. In the cosine formula I was using the assumed position for the cos data and the actual position for the sin data (or vice versa). Once I realised my error I quickly had the correct answer.

    I have made more progress in the past few days than in the 40+ years since I purchased the sextant. I can now look forward to putting my copy of Norie to good use, working the sight with the haversine formula and the A-K short method (Ogura).
