Robert,
Over the years of CN I found by accident that a small amount of side error assisted in determining index error when observing a star or planet. The induced side error would then be removed after the index error was determined. It was on this list that I learned a small amount of side error could be left on the sextant without affecting precision. This means less fooling with the horizon mirror which is always a good thing.
