I intend to write an article about these instruments some time in the near future. Until then have a look at the article by Samuel Herrick "Instrumental solutions in celestial navigation" in: Journal of Navigation (Washington), Vol. 1 (1946), 22 - 27; Weems, Air navigation, New York 1937, 311 - 321 (which seems to be the basis of the chapter in Bowditch 1962 and 1977 about instrumental solutions) and Crone, Overeenkomst tusschen de 16e eeuwsche navigatie ter zee en de hedendaagsche navigatie ter zee en in de lucht, in: De Zee, Vol. 53 (1931), 708 - 720, Vol. 54 (1932), 7 - 15, 94 - 100, 137 - 143.

    Regards,
    Wolfgang
