Wolfgang, > I intend to write an article about these instruments > some time in the near future. Have you seen and tried any of them ? (I have not, even in the museums. Only pictures.) On my opinion, the main question is what accuracy can be actually achieved. With a simple star globe I can do to about 2 degrees. Some descriptions in the literature mention 1' ("Spherotrigonometer") but I don't believe this, especially for the devices which do a complete fix, rather than solve one triangle. Alex.
