That brings me to another point. If search engines are bringing in so many
visitors to the archive, why not invite them in, by including joining
instructions with each archived and listed message?
Our listed messages include, at the foot (as this one will) instructions on
finding the archive, posting, and unsubscribing, but, for some reason, not
    on subscribing. Why ever not?
    and Frank replied-
Regarding making it easier to sign up for NavList, I've been thinking about
something like that for a few weeks as part of other enhancements: enter an
email address, click a button, and you're done... wouldn't that be nice?
Yes, but I was thinking of something far simpler and less technical..
I have quite a lot of dialogue about maritime matters that are unconnected
with this list, and quite often wish to pass on details of how my
correspondents might join the list if they wished. A few Navlist members
have arrived via that route. That doesn't always succeed, as in the case of
the Fix Finder buyer, which might have been my fault or his. So I suggest
it could be made easier for us to discover how to inform non-members about
making that initial contact. That was one reason for my suggestion, and I
    think it still applies.
For the record, I suggested to him-
"You can join by sending a blank email,
with no subject or message, to-
    NavList-subscribe@fer3.com "
He replied- "I've tried connecting to the navlist but the computer will not
    send off my message."
    So then I tried-
"Perhaps your emailer objects to sending a message that's devoid of subject
and/or content. If so, you could try including dummy information, such as
your name, perhaps. I expect that it will be ignored on receipt. The only
think that matters is your email address, and the list will check that by
next sending a message to that address for you to confirm.
If you still get problems, try contacting Frank Reed, who runs the list,
asking for him to sign you in. Best place to contact him may be at-
The list has an internet home page at-
    http://groups.google.com/group/NavList/ "
Obviously, something worked, because he then contacted you. But problems do
seem to be arising, and I wonder whether my advice was correct. A few clear
words, at the foot of each posting, might be of use.
