    Yes, the ex-meridian is a good way to check and improve on taking sights, using a known place or GPS as a reference. The other way is to use bodies that are near 180 degrees a part and measure the gap between LOP'S. certainly waiting for the body to touch the horrizon allows seeing more detail of the body and horrizon, when time, distance and motion are small, but watch out for the Vertical Sextant. You can learn alot about you, the sextant, and your ability for the vertical.
