Mr Boersma, you wrote: "Thanks to Mr. LaPook's posting of several snippets from Harold Gatty's Raft Book, I was able to experiment with some of the methods described and I was impressed with the results -- latitude by length of day as computed by his tables gave me a latitude within 7min of my actual latitude. Congratulations on this feat. Could you describe your experience? Did you have a sea horizon with a view of both sunrise/sunset , along with a sea-level stretch of coast (beach)? Were you on a boat? If you were inland, did you use your height above sea-level and a level shadow marker? It would be interesting to know that. The longitude based on the time of sunrise was off, but this is due to the tables being developed for the 3d year in the 4 year solar cycle (1943) and not for the second year in the cycle (2010). I would think that the tables would be accurate for 2011. Is there any evidence of the Raft Book actually being used by a novice navigator to successfully complete a voyage? ---------------------------------------------------------------- NavList message boards and member settings: www.fer3.com/NavList Members may optionally receive posts by email.
