I realized. I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek, which doesn't come over well in e-mail. Once upon a time, though, nautical chronometers were considered a specialized tool used strictly for navigation. I keep a running tab on my Timex Ironman against the NIST time.

By instrument I meant a specialized tool used strictly for navigation. While a watch is used for navigation it is also used for other activities as well. A watch does give the possibility of being able to determine latitude and longitude.
