Thanks to Mr. LaPook's posting of several snippets from Harold Gatty's Raft Book, I was able to experiment with some of the methods described and I was impressed with the results -- latitude by length of day as computed by his tables gave me a latitude within 7min of my actual latitude.
The longitude based on the time of sunrise was off, but this is due to the tables being developed for the 3d year in the 4 year solar cycle (1943) and not for the second year in the cycle (2010). I would think that the tables would be accurate for 2011.
Is there any evidence of the Raft Book actually being used by a novice navigator to successfully complete a voyage?
