    ISO latitude/longitude standard formats
    From: Paul Hirose

Did you know the ISO has a standard for representing latitude and
    longitude? I didn't, until I came across it by accident. Here's a
place where you can download ISO 6709. There's a link to view a
summary of the standard, and farther down the page is a link to
download the actual PDF. It's about 188 k. Remember the number, 6709,
because there are many other standards on this page:

    http://www.ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/doc/ISO/english/

The following page also has useful info on some commonly needed ISO
    standards:

I wish I'd known about ISO 6709 several years ago, when I wrote a
program which processed lists of angular data in text files. Several
different angle formats were supported, but I'm sorry to say that my
formats not only failed to conform to an existing standard, but also
were less flexible and compact than they could have been. Ouch.
