Just a short note. I am at the moment very busy finishing a work. You mention the photo being a "mirage". I am not able to see a mirage at all. We are again back on the taxonomy of refraction phenomenons. Here is a link to Andy's Mirage page http://mintaka.sdsu.edu/GF/mirages/mirintro.html with some photos and here are some further photos http://virtual.finland.fi/public/default.aspx?contentid=160069&contentlan=2&culture=en-US You will see that a mirage is something else than what your photo seems to show.
Here is a description of some refractional phenomenons http://mintaka.sdsu.edu/GF/mirages/mirsims/loom/loom.html which could be related to your photo. Was it may be "looming"?

This morning I was able to capture an image of a passing ship showing a noticeable mirage at the waterline. (See pic 80). Then vesseltraffic.com was consulted to get ship details.

To my surprise vesseltraffic.com showed an image taken from nearly the exact same angle (starboard quarter). Chances of this are about one in eight. Still it was a shocker to see such a similar image pop up (minus the mirage).
A second set of dip images of the jetty , breakwall, and Anacapa Island were also taken. This time the tide was high vs. the low tide on the previous set( air temp matched the sea temp at 53 F). The horizon dip worked out to exactly standard. Beyond the horizon distances to Anacapa Island worked out as being 2 moa high. This would be about the height of the mirage observed at the waterline of the container ship APL CHINA (8 nm away in image).
