Let me relate some other ways refraction anomalies appear over water. Instead of the reflected image of the lower part of the hull the reflected image may be of the sky as in the dessert mirage and then the boat appears to be floating above the horizon. another manifestation is a distortion of the horizon so that there appear to be numerous small pine trees on the horizon. They dance around ie appear and disappear. These are commonly seen on Lake Superior about this time of year when the air is cold and the water relatively warm.
