Mercury freezes at -37.89º F, from meteorological data the average temperatures in December at the South pole is reported between -20.7º F to -15.7ñ F with max of +9.9º F.
I agree that the AH in the famous photo appears to be a glass one, but the temperature only should not have precluded the use of a mercury one.I do not know what was the temperature at the precise time the photo was taken.
