I am no expert but assume it would have been a darkened glass AH like this one that sold on EBay not too long ago.

Subject: [NavList] Home made level vial observation results & Amundson at the So. Pole
I have been looking for documentation as to what kind of artificial horizon was used in the famous photo of the Amundson sextant shots at the south pole. Someone in Nav-list may have read the expedition diaries but for now I am too cheap to buy them. It looks to me as though the AH in the photo is actually a mirror, not a tray of mercury and My reasons for believing this are hand written on the highly enlarged attachment. It's the old "if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be"....well you know. If anyone has read documents from the expedition members that indicate other wise please let me know. Until you correct me, it amuses this junior navigator to think he's using the same technique that was used in this very important moment in history.
