    Tracing paper?!

    Since the 1847 chart and modern chart are available in digital form it's quite a bit easier and quicker to overlay them in photoshop elements. Then you can scale them, adjust the transparency and move them around at will. Following Mark's suggestion the images were scaled using the lengths in the legend and then aligned by eye focusing on the the area around Stonington. Doing this leaves Fisher Island a bit displaced but its overall shape seems very good,
