I have recently found a 1947 Heath Hezzanith sextant (model S17?), complete with all lenses, tools etc in its box amongst my father-in-law's effects.
I am learning astro-nav. and would dearly like to be able to put this instrument to good use. Does anyone know where I can get hold of a copy of the users handbook?
Any guidance would be much appreciated.(I have tried the UK Science Museum, surprisingly with no success).

I too have a Heath Hezzanith, of 1974 vintage. I
too looked in vain for any documentation specific to it. I'm now doubtful there
ever was a user's manual for these sextants.
A document relevant to Heath sextants is My Modern Sextant (notes on how to know and how to handle it), G.A Heath, Heath and Company, 1937. This is available for download in PDF format(around 2.8Meg) at various sites, including my page www.pcug.org.au/~martin/Sextants/ click on the link to Heath for download. If you have any problems, email me direct. In the preface, the author notes that this document was produced in response to many requests for such a guide.

A good general guide to the care of sextants, often
referred to in this list, is The Sextant Handbook, by Bruce Bauer 2nd ed.,
1992. Available everywhere. Also, Bowditch, Duttons and others have
sections on the care and maintenance of sextants.
