Anyone interested in the life of Frank Worsley would find ‘Shackleton’s Captain’ by John Thompson a very good read.  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shackletons-Captain-Biography-Frank-Worsley/dp/0889626782 He was indeed an adventurer. DaveP

    Yes, old school heroes.

....They all seem to have been ex army...

Not all ex-army.  Both Shackleton and Frank Worsley (a second generation Kiwi) were Merchant Navy officers, eventually becoming Master Mariners.  Shackleton probably did have the kind of education you describe - an example of what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.  Life would also have been hard in their early seagoing experiences in square riggers.

    Best regards

    John
