If you're by yourself then that is that; when you're looking for a
helping hand the only reliable place to find it will be at the end of
your arm.

But whenever possible I encourage (dragoon) the use of an assistant.
On well-crewed boats we stand watches of two, and often the other
person, even if knowing nothing of nav, is amenable to acting as a
scribe.

This way not only is the whole process of observation much more
practical, but you have a much better chance of recording multiple obs
over five minutes of time, leading generally to a much better derived
sight. If the assistant is still keen she (we live in hope) can also
be put to work to plot the sights she has recorded, before comparing
them with the slope of apparent rise or fall.
