Paul:
D,L,t are coordinates that describe the relative angular positions of Earth, Heavely Body and you, the navigator. There is a procedure, called sight reduction, that allows you to use your sextant measurement, an "almanac" ( list of astronomical data ) and certain formulas to estimate with often high accuracy where on Earth you are. People have used various means to execute these calculations, e.g.diagrams. Mine is such a diagram. It is meant for a preliminary evaluation of a formula which plays a prominent role in the game.
Before I go into detail, I would rather like to direct you to the book "Celestial Navigation in a Nutshell (Seafarer Books)" by Hewitt Schlereth ( about $12 ) . Hewitt does a marvellous job explaining things - no way I could compete with him in succinctness and clarity.
CelNav can indeed become a captivating avocation, and I am glad you are about to catch that bug.

Hanno-
I’m coming in in the middle of this conversation, so forgive my question: You start with D, L, and t. What do these mean?
