    It seems that haversines go back further than 1905. The Oxford English Dictionary cites use of the term "haversine" in 1875, in Redford: Sailor's Pocket Book.

    The graph from the Google Books Ngram Viewer shows a few blips for "haversine" as early as about 1845.
