Hanno, don't these methods require you to make a table before you do the multiplying - ie, a preliminary chance to make blunders even ante getting to to the problem?

I'm with Gary and Greg on this one. Though I'm very slow at long multiplication, I do get there. (Then of course there's my backup - baggies of batteries and two-bit calculators.)

    Gents,

how can you stand making such complicated long multiplications?
I admire your stamina but I'd go crazy.

You might think I am already crazy using the Vedic / Butterfly
multiplication method but as an extremely poor "multiplicator"
I can tell you it works wonders for me. If you can spare the
time and patience I ask you give it a chance with a number
of trial runs and see how it fits you really. You might be surprised.

If you do I am happy to give you as many examples as you wish.
    Just ask.

I redid Greg's example problem using the haversine table in Bowditch, which has five places, and, not surprisingly, computed the Hc to the accuracy of one-tenth of a minute.
