Re: Hardly ever get an LOP than 20 NM - why?

I rarely come up with an LOP under 20NM

Laurence, do you mean intercept (Ho - Hc) under 20NM ?
I am also using ASTRAIIIB and a mirror artificial horizon. As an assumed position (AP)  I am using my GPS coordinates and vast majority of my intercepts are less than1NM (it depends on how precise I can level my mirror). If your AP is different then of course you can get a much bigger intercept but resulting LOP will be the same!
To check your sextant measurements instantly you can use the app of Frank Reed:

Concerning a technical side of ASTRAIIIB I found a noticeable asymmetry in index correction (I.C.) see my older post:

you can check it as well
    kind regards,
    Igor
