George, Let me put it this way. I have 3 computers on the boat (helm, galley and berth). I have and use sight reduction software about half of the time. I have e-charts which display at the helm and the galley. I use paper charts, tide/current tables, log/trig tables, slide rule, stubby pencil and a BIG eraser, sight reduction forms and tables as well as lots of scrap paper. What I my students that you use any method available (computer, programmable calculator, calculator, log/trig table, slide rule, or long hand) but if they need to know how to develop their answers by hand - notice I did not say that they had to be comfortable - just know how to get there. This holds true for DR. piloting, e-nav (radar) as well as CN. From what I have seen, not many folks use CN the way that I do - just as there are few who are prepared to develop manual DR plots and determine actual set & drift calculations either.
