Dear members, especially in the United States.
Please keep an open eye for old Hamilton 21 Chronometer boxes and gimbal
sets in any condition, or for each one of these separately, either without a
chronometer movement at all, or with a dead lump of rust still installed (as
unlikely as it is for such a high quality instrument). I am told by several
people in the trade that restoring and old box and a set of gimbals from
whatever state they might be in, would be much simpler and cheaper than building
the whole thing from scratch using exploded views from the manual and possible
measurements from someone’s existing box.
The option of using any other maker’s box and gimbals also arose. The
opinion is that although they were all similar in size and construction, they
would not just fit without a certain amount of modification work, Any experience
there?
