Robert- very nice and it's all algebra- no calculus.
Geoffrey- I struggled with the wording. You're right. It wouldn't slip off the earth if only the stretch were relieved. But hey, even at 1/6 inch, it's bound to get hung up on a Himalaya or two.
As we used to joke in school when asked a silly word problem. "Assume a spherical cow."
