My device might not be a recreation of the original locking mechanism but it sure works well!

I am still curious as to what mechanism is behind the
    original tube lock...

Pondered it quite a while. The apparent sensitivity to
a special adjustment makes it unlikely that my cam
    idea is the true explanation.

I thought about a set of radial knee levers that could
offer the advantage of giving an inherently stable
    locked position...?

Brad, from the feel of the locking process is there any
indication of how it might work?

Gary's sqeezed-rubber stopping mechanism seems to
present an unlikely explanation as apparently these
locking mechanisms work even after 70 years when
rubber has usually turned hard and unflexible...

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Best regards
    Wolfgang
