Byron:Jeremy , To any one on a ship with gyro. Many years ago I was sent to
various ships to check on navigation, especially on the gyro and alignment.
On boarding the majority of ship I was told that gyro error was zero.
After a quick around of bearing using the Franklin Piloting Techique I found
error in most ships, most was gyro error and a few with alignment.
Example was the Intrepid; she left the yard after her gyro was worked on
and traveled to Norfolk VA. Than to RI. Without notice that
she had a one. Five EAST gyro error. She got underway with me watching her
chart fixes;(never touched the chart) within ten minute I told the Navigator she had a one. Five east error.
(This proved correct.) Is this a big deal? Maybe? She ran aground right where the DR using
the unknown 1.5 error would put her. Coincidence?
What I would like is, any one in position to use the technique along side pier, anchored or under way, or check fixes after the transit.use the technique and check your gyro, Let me know what you found.
Don’t think you equipment is new, up-to-date, and you never had a problem.
Take that extra step you may learn a lot. I would appreciate feed back even if 0 error.
