I am going to start regular group sextant sight-taking opportunities here in southern New England for beginning celestial navigation students and experienced navigation enthusiasts, too. These will take place at Beavertail Point on Conanicut Island (Jamestown, RI, not far from Newport), a location quite near where I live now, both to make it easier for me and because it has a wide open ocean horizon covering 120 degrees from azimuth 92 to 212. This spot is about 55 minutes from Mystic, CT and about an hour and 45 minutes from Boston, MA. It's in a beautiful state park with a historic lighthouse, amazing rocks, and nice ocean surf. It's worth a visit even without the sextant fun. There's good parking, too. The location is at lat,lon = 41.4493,-71.3994. You can drop those numbers directly into the search box at Google Maps.
I am posting dates and times today to get the ball rolling. A few details will follow later. The dates are chosen based on various astronomical and practical factors. All dates are either Saturday or Sunday and times are either 9-11am or 4-6pm. The FIRST event is in TEN DAYS! No charge for any of this, but donations are welcome. I will have a few sextants available, but bring your own if you have one. NOTE: this is not a class nor a substitute for a class.
1) Sunday, June 10: 9:00am-11:00am. Sun in the east, Moon in WSW.
2) Sunday, June 24: 4:00pm-6:00pm. Moon in the south near meridian, Sun in the west.
3) Saturday, July 14: 9:00am-11:00am. Sun in the east, Moon high in the south near meridian.
4) Sunday, July 22: 4:00pm-6:00pm. Moon high in south, Sun in SW.
I hope to see some NavList members at these gatherings in addition to students from recent classes.
