Re: Group project: how to buy a sextant

    (1) Read Bruce Bauer, THE SEXTANT HANDBOOK, carefully.
    (2) Read W.J. Morris,  THE NAUTICAL SEXTANT,  and Bill's blog carefully.
    (3) Lurk on Ebay and put every sextant that comes up on your watch list and put a bid in at the last second on those that meet the criteria you have compiled from the above reading and that have not priced through the roof.

As it was I did step 3 (without the criteria, obviously) first.  I got reasonably lucky but I could have done better if I had been better informed.  I am saving up for a second try.

This comes up so often that I think it would be appropriate if we assembled all the advice we can come up with as a community. How do you pick out a sextant? Who are the dealers in new sextants? How do we select older sextants on ebay? What are the pitfalls? What I'm thinking here is we'll put together all the advice we can and put a link to it on the main NavList page.
