I bought a 1976 Tamaya clone off Ebay about a year ago and have been very satisfied. The only problem was a cloudy index mirror which had been noted by the seller and which was easily replaced.
For about a month I kept an eye on the Ebay sextant market by setting up a watch list on marine sextants over $100 (or maybe it was $200). The only ones that looked good to me were the Japanese models. I tried for one, but bid too low. Then another nice looking one came along (and a NavList correspondent agreed). I picked a maximum price that was a stretch and put in the bid with 5 sec remaining. There was one other last second bidder, but I outbid him/her by $50.
One additional thing: I'd look for a sextant that has an honest sounding description that comes from a reputable Ebay seller. Then if you do get sent a lemon, you can give the seller a black mark with Ebay.
Cheers,
George B
p.s. I recently carried the sextant on a flight to the Caribbean with no hassle from security. They briefly looked inside the box on the trip down, and let it go through unopened on the way home.
