Several years ago I bought, via Ebay, a Davis Mk. 15, a plastic sextant. It was described as used but in excellent condition, and it included a Davis Leveling device, eliminated the need to "rock" the sextant. Total cost, shipping included came to perhaps $110.
So far as I can tell, the instrument was as advertized, and while it is subject to the problems of any other plastic sextant, and the telescope leaves something to be desired, it does work, when used with care, check index error before and after shooting.
What it all boils down to is the following. One pays their money and hopes for the best. While one can certainly get stung, one can also obtain entirely serviceable instruments.
The fopregoing sums up what little experience I've had buying used sextants on Ebay.
