    Greenwich getting a challenge

This article is interesting.  It appears that Greenwich is getting a challenger.  But one thing the article keeps referencing is Big Ben.  The last time I looked on a map (having never darkened the door of Great Britain) Big Ben was in downtown London, while the Royal Observatory is in..well...Greenwich.

Also the time standard was set by treaty in the 1880's or 90's so for Mecca to challenge Big Ben/Greenwich wouldn't there need to be a modification of the treaty.

And another thought.  Couldn't anyone anywhere declare whatever meridian they are sitting on to be the start of the "day."  Didn't that happen before with all the different royal observatories in Europe.  There was one of course in Greenwich, Paris, Frankfurt?, and Thomas Jefferson attempted to establish one as well here in the United States as well.

Just wondering out loud as I ponder the issues of the world.  Yes I am bored at work.

    Andrew
