Great circle crossing the Equator on a Mercator's Chart?

Have you noticed?  All the great minds writing online rejoice in giving examples of rhumb lines and great circles on a Mercator’s chart in either hemisphere, but try and find an example of great circle crossing the Equator on a Mercator’s chart.  You’ll struggle to find one, so perhaps the authors are not so clever after all.  How do you think you would draw a great circle from 40N, 40W to 40S, 40E for example?  DaveP
