Oops. I was close but wrong!
I should have noticed that for the haversine it matters where in the "unit circle" the gap between 90° and (dec + lat) lies.
As in: the sum of LHA and azimuth is close (in the case shown) to 180°, but most certainly doesn't equal 180°.
