The method was published by Favé (not: Favet) and Rollet de L'Isle in the "Annales hydrgraphiques" (1892), although the idea goes back to the 17th and 18th century. It received a certain publicity in the early 20th century when methods of astronomical navigation in the air (balloons) were discussed in Germany, France and England. This discussion ultimately led to instruments like the Baker Navigating machine, the "Orion" and also to the Astrograph used in WWII bombers.
This part of the history of navigation is covered in the 1977 edition of Bowditch (Vol. 1, pages 601 and 608) and in Williams, Astronomical Navigation in the Air 1919 - 1969, in: Blanchard (Ed.), Air Navigation from Ballons to Concorde, Woodfield 2005, 89 (96) - which is a reprint from JIN Vol. 41, No. 3 and Vol. 42, No. 1 (1988).
