Bruce, your book, "Tables for Clearing the Lunar Distance and Finding GMT by Sextant Observation" finally arrived. Nautical Mind in Toronto said they had to wait a month after it shipped from Seattle, and Seattle had to wait for a reprint or something. Well worth the wait. Lots of nice gems. I especially liked, "I get wildly variable notions of index error from a horizon or a star. I wear trifocals, and my eyes were never particularly sharp...". Fits my experience, which is reassuring. I've been finding the sun more useful, and you confirm that too. I also liked your idea of strapping a notepad to a free arm, for recording observations. Have to think about that. Had a beautiful sky last night when I tiredly got out of the van after driving home from a shift that ended at midnight. Too beat to get the sextant out, but I've got a few days off to try out some lunars, if the clouds cooperate. Getting chilly though.
