    That is sad news indeed. I had the chance to discuss with George and his wife one and a half years ago and was impressed by his knowledge and character. We all have lost a prolific contributor to Navlist.

    Frank;
    It is with great sadnest that I  should tell everyone on the list that George Huxtable will be unable to respond to all his friends on the nav list anymore.George died on early in December from a protracted illness. He had had a re-accurrance of Cancer earlier in the year that eventually was untreatable and he died at home at Southmoor, Abingdon near Oxford. He was buried there just before Christmas .His wife Joan will still be living at their house but as yet will not be replying to emails.
    I am and have been a reader of Navlist for many years and any messages for her I will gladly pass on. I can be contacted at <clive@jcsutherland.wanadoo.co.uk.>

    George was born just before the start of the 1939-45 war in Liverpool and we both shared experience of  the Blitz years there. many years later he became a Physicist and worked at Harwell Atomic Research Labs were I met him through a shared interest in sailing. He had developed a passionate interest in navigation and was to became a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation.
     His particular interest was in CN, in the practise of Lunars and a great deal of his activity on the list was in this field. Many of you will have shared this interest and will greatly miss his expert corespondance. I am very pleased to be reminded by Frank that his words will live on through the benefit of the list archives.

    Yours with regret
    Clive.

    There are a couple of people over the years who have requested an option for plain text delivery of NavList messages. These are now available. Attachments are listed as links. If any of you would prefer this option, let me know and I will set it up for you.

    I've added new indexes of full years of NavList messages. You can find those in the archives section of the message board web site here: http://fer3.com/arc. The new indexes also permit subject and author searching though for now this requires a little editing of the URL. For example, out of the nearly 33,000 messages available, if you would like to see all 2,683 messages posted by George Huxtable, you would go this web address (URL):
    http://www.fer3.com/arc/sort2.aspx?y=199401&y2=202001&author=huxtable
    Or to see all 1,805 messages from Gary L, you would go here:
    http://www.fer3.com/arc/sort2.aspx?y=199401&y2=202001&author=lapook
    Or to see all 2,973 messages from me, you would go here:
    http://www.fer3.com/arc/sort2.aspx?y=199401&y2=202001&author=frank%20reed

    Sorting of messages is now by UT, which should help a bit. Messages are listed individually and in the indexes by the author's name even over the course of various email address changes that many of us have had over the years. Oh and names with diacritics (umlauts and such) display properly, too. URLs for messages are now "friendlier". This should help with search engine rankings. As an example, here's a message from George Huxtable from the year 2000:
    http://fer3.com/arc/m2.aspx/Blish-prism-sextant-Huxtable-jul-2000-w2818
    You'll notice that it includes keywords from the subject, the author's name or some portion thereof, and the month and year of the message. This makes links more self-explanatory. The older method using plain numerical indexes still works, of course. The new URLs are automatically generated as messages come in.

    Let me know if you post any bugs or other issues.
