John: As scorer for the Los Angeles Yacht Club for over twenty years, I watched the transition to GPS time. Before, we used WWV to set a timer box, but a new regime wanted to use GPS and hand held watches. I still kept WWV time, but had to accede to the sailors, all of whom used GPS time. And for the tail enders in long distance races, we required that the finishing yachts take their own time. That was GPS, of course, so I had to blend in. I never noted more than a second difference, but I've heard of larger amounts. The message is that GPS time isn't as accurate as WWV time, and navigators need to know this.
