My respectful suggestion is to think seriously of putting the extra money
    towards a metal sextant.

George Bennett has addressed this problem with his "Complete On-Board
Celestial Navigator" which supplies a five year almanac plus everything else
needed - sight reduction tables, star finder tables, instructions, examples,
forms to be photo-copied, etc, etc, all in a slim volume that costs about 20
bucks. It is specifically designed to be a backup system to GPS.
