Just by chance there is was a show on the History Channel tonight about diving on a wreck that turns out to be the ship that carried Byrd to Antarctica. There was some footage of the flight over the pole including these frames showing Byrd using his sextant. I suspect that this footage was not shot at the time but was set up later, but I might be wrong. What I find strange is that it shows Byrd looking through the scope and rotating the micrometer knob but then you see that the sextant was mounted on some kind of a stand. It never occured to me that you could mount this type of sextant for taking sights. The Kollsman periscopic sextant mount is gimbaled so that you can move the sextant to keep it level while taking the sight but the Byrd mount does not look like it can be moved around.

    Your thoughts?

    G'day Gary.

What, please, is the source of http://www.fer3.com/arc/imgx/Plath.jpg ?

I can see that it's from a book, but not one that I know.

    Thanks

    Bill Morris
