Peter
Fogg is right. Books like these are expensive to produce (not to print perhaps).
There is a lot more work involved in getting the pictures right, in the
typesetting etc. than in a run-of-the-mill novel. And it is very difficult these
days to figure out how many people will buy such a specialized book. No wonder
OUP thought that an excellent book like "Astrolabes at Greenwich" would sell a
lot of copies and underestimated how many people would really put that much
money on the counter. Even large libraries have had to cut back on purchasing so
a publisher does not have a certain amount of copies sold. It's a poor show,
though, to give away the rest of the print run just a few years after
publication.
In any
case, I am sure that Willem will not get rich through this book, whatever the
price will be; no one doing serious historical work ever
does.
Regards,
Wolfgang
