Byron: Certainly there are many ways to find compass error and get good fixes. With proper and good equipment taking bearing on the chart should be a sure thing without error. I was use to having trained personnel to give me the bearings very quickly so that the ship would not move during the time for taking more bearings. Let me bring up a few things that you may already understand.
In taking a round of bearing with little personnel or even only one. First, take the Navaid bearing near the beam, use that time for the fix next any Navaid off the quarters than the Navaid more fwd or aft... More, FWD and AFT bearings will change very slow or not at all. This will give you the time for correct ship position and error. If there is an error making a triangle, use the Franklin Technique? The same situation will help to correct the magnetic compass, but not for perfect fixes but will certainly improve your fixing.
